Social media is part of everyday life for children and teenagers. It helps them communicate, learn, discover new interests and stay connected with friends and family.

The challenge is not to keep young people away from technology, but to help them develop a healthier and more balanced relationship with it.

That is why Meta’s new protections for users under 18 on Instagram and Facebook are important. Beyond the legal and financial aspects of the agreement, several of these changes could have practical benefits for young people’s health and well-being.

More Time to Sleep

One of the most valuable changes involves nighttime use.

Meta’s new protections include a default nighttime block from midnight to 6 a.m., helping teens disconnect from feeds, Reels and other content during sleeping hours.

This matters because good sleep is essential during childhood and adolescence. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports strong evidence that digital technology use around bedtime can delay sleep, reduce sleep duration and affect sleep quality.

A simple message is behind the change: there should be a time to connect and a time to rest.

A Better Balance With Screen Time

The new protections also establish a default two-hour daily limit across Instagram and Facebook, along with reminders designed to interrupt long periods of continuous use.

This does not mean that screen time is always bad. Technology can support learning, creativity, communication and social connections.

The key is balance. Less time spent continuously scrolling can leave more room for exercise, hobbies, family conversations, friends, reading, outdoor activities and sleep.

Fewer Distractions at School

Notifications will also be muted by default during school hours.

For students, this could mean fewer interruptions while listening to a teacher, reading or completing an assignment.

Technology can remain an important educational tool without demanding a young person’s attention every few minutes.

Less Pressure From Social Media

Some of the changes are also designed to reduce social comparison.

“Like” and reaction counts will be hidden by default for teens, while cosmetic-surgery and extreme-makeup filters will be restricted.

These measures may help reinforce an important message for young people:

Their value is not determined by the number of reactions they receive online or by an artificially modified image of themselves.

Parents Will Have More Tools

Parents will also have greater control over certain settings and time limits.

But perhaps the greatest benefit is not the control itself. These tools can help families start conversations about sleep, screen time, online safety, self-image and healthy technology habits.

The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that digital environments can support learning and well-being when they are designed around children’s developmental needs.

Technology Can Be Part of a Healthy Life

Social media can offer real benefits. It can connect young people, encourage creativity and provide access to information, communities and educational opportunities.

The goal should not be to remove technology from their lives.

It should be to help them understand that social media is one part of life, not all of it.

Meta’s new protections are a step in that direction. If they help young people sleep better, spend less time continuously scrolling, concentrate more easily and feel less pressure from online comparisons, their most important value may ultimately be measured not in dollars, but in something much more meaningful: the health and well-being of our children and teenagers.
